Syracuse, New York, is a center of learning. Two New York state universities are located here, as well as several private schools and community colleges. Because of the large number of colleges in Syracuse, one of the largest fields of employment is the education sector, with Syracuse University as the largest employer. More than 18,000 students attend this school every year, assuring Syracuse of a large student population. The current Carousel Center is undergoing expansion, to be turned into the Destiny USA mall, which will be among the largest in the country. Developers hope that the mall will bring many new jobs for students and recent grads, and bring in tourists besides. Syracuse was built as a crossroads between the Erie Canal and other shipping channels, then between railroad lines. This importance as a network of transportation is still important today, as the two major interstate highways cross in Syracuse and it hosts a major airport. The arts in Syracuse include an opera and symphony orchestra, and the Expo Center holds events, concerts and shows.
